BASTIAAN MOL

(male, he -him, gay) born 1954 in Rotterdam , Netherlands.

He lives and works from his home in Delfshaven one of the oldest parts in Rotterdam

His official art education he got at the

Academy of Arts in Antwerp,Belgium (1986-1991)

Live posing male models are the inspiration of his work most of the time.

Other influences are various sorts of music,often world-music and classical , but also art-deco style , stories he reads ,etc. His moods of the moment also can make the inspiration, just as the various kinds of models influence different kinds of paintings...

His very first solo exhibition found place while he lived in Antwerp, 1987.

( documented ,as dutch gay newspaper De Gaykrant filled an entire page to it and also some Belgian magazines for the gay society mentioned it at the time ).

these male paintings mostly were created from live models. However Bastiaan sometimes can change features of these models,

giving them different eyecolour, or haircolour , or taking away - or adding - a beard.

If YOU would like to model for Bastiaan too and you are 18 - 35 ish of age , little bodyhair (or shaved) , use the contact form and see the section MODELS on this site. Bastiaan also will sometimes work on commision. If you would like your own (nude) painting ,painted by him, let me know. Bastiaan has also painted couples posing for him. Ask the possibillities.

THE MODELS

Posingsessions usually only take 1,5 hour for models to pose.
and: no need for long periods or sitting still ! Short poses is what I find useful .
I always hear from my models that they very much liked the posing atmosphere . Also because it is not in a sterile cold photostudio, but in a home, where there is a cosy atmosphere, warm temperatures and a good contact between artist and model. Even first time amateur models are feeling very comfortable here...and often say they would love to come again if required...
And remember: everybody and each body has it`s flaws. NOBODY is 100% flawless and perfect.
Perfection here is not needed .Models are often insecure about certain bodyparts and that is also just normal. A sixpack is not really requiered .Just bodyhair needs to be trimmed short/ shaven for posing .

THE TV documentary
about the MALE paintings of Bastiaan Mol

During April and May 2024 a TV-documentary was being filmed

about Bastiaan Mol and specifically about his MALE paintings.

It started with Bastiaan spotting Tycho on socialmedia pages and he asked him to model for him some time. Although Tycho was intrigued, he put it off as the new lover he met did not like him doing it. Months later, the lover was obviously gone and Tycho contacted me again and asked me if I would be still willing to have him as a model. And , if so, would I want to cooperate in a project of him for his schooling. Their would be made a documentary for dutch TV and Tycho would not only direct it ,but also be my model in this documentary.

Their were some visits just to talk things over , what I would or would not like.

To me, a model session is strictly between artist and model.It is an intimate situation, that requirs peace, special music and concentration in order to get good material that can be used later. A posingsession with crewmembers walking around you filming, taping the sound ,etc, can hardly be intimate. Also the model wanted to interview me , during the posingsession. That means TWO directors doing their thing at the same time. I have found this very difficult.

Also: their would be filming of me, while creating the painting,painted after the posingsession. I always am alone while painting. I don`t want to be disturbed than and even soft sounds will irritate me and keep me from being concentrated.

So, when I was busy painting, and a camera pointed over my shoulder to film, I was not the happiest person and asked myself WHY I said I would do it.

Their have been four days of filming. At my home : the posingsession,but also interviews were filmed and later the opening of my art exhibition where the painting was presented to Tycho. Also art collectors were filmed during interviews.

October 2024 it was shown on Dutch NPO2-TV . The result was good. A pity lots of interesting filmed material could not be included , due to a fixed time scedule of NPO2-TV .However, all the filmed material I am happy to have received, it is about 4 hours of footage : interviews , the opening of the art exhibition,etc.

PUBLICATIONS

Besides the TV-documentary, the art of Bastiaan Mol was also in the press.

In recent years several magazines placed interviews and photos of his work.

JUTURNA artmagazine , had for two editions , each eight pages with Bastiaan`s male art ,

and also interviews.

German Boner magazine had seven pages with his work plus interview.

German HIM-magazine also placedmany of his paintings and a short bio.

Spanish magazine DONOVAN ,placed two of his paintings.

Bastiaan also created two illustration for Dutch pop-noir band The Bullfight,

for two different albums.

Already for 5 years his 7 days contribution in the Your Daily Male artcalendar

Art gallery Mooiman in Groningen, in the very north of Netherlands,

usually has about 30 of his paintings to be sold. Search for their website to see them .

Bastiaan and the Portuguese FADO music

Bastiaan loves the Portuguese FADO! Already for centuries now.

His love for fadomusic brought him many times to Portugal , Lisbon and Porto mostly, as it is there that the fado lives . He started befriending fadosingers (so called FADISTAS) and painted 2 or 3 of them.After that he kept being ask to also paint others and it went on and on.

From 2013 -2024 he painted 66 portraits of fadosingers.Most of these are in Lisbon already.

THREE of these fadoportraits are part of the main exhibition in Lisbon at the

museum Associação Alfredo Marceneiro : the heritage of the great fado composer and singer

ALFREDO MARCENEIRO. Bastiaan was made a member of honor to this museum and one of his paintings is right above the entrance of the museum,while two others are inside .Most of the fadosingers became good friends through the years and many photos of them together with their portrait show how they love them . The iconic painting also is found on winelables, placemats in restaurants, and even the total back of a marketstand selling fadomusic has Bastiaan`s painting.
